bordure In heraldry, coats of arms are frequently
surrounded with a bordure, the object of which is to show that the
bearer is a cadet of the house whose arms he carries. Its character
often has reference to the profession of the bearer; thus a bordure
embattled is granted to a soldier, and a bordure ermine to a lawyer.
